Web sites for historically Black colleges and universities don't stack up against their competition worldwide, according to a new study. The Spain-based Cybermetrics Lab rated websites for 15,000 universities worldwide, but no predominately Black school made the top 1,000-ranked Web sites, the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education reported.
The rating/ranking were based on the number of pages on the site, number of links from other sites to the school site, and the scholarly content available from the school site. Based on the criteria, the system tended to favor large research facilities.
Howard University's site was the highest ranked historically Black school, at 1,066. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore's site came in at 1,672, and Morgan State University at 2,445. Bowie State University, Delaware State University and Coppin State University websites all made the top 4,000, ranked 2,769, 3,098 and 3,850 respectively.
Most colleges and universities make use of websites to spread the word about their programs, enroll students and present information about the various classes and departments on campus.
American schools were heavily represented in the top 4,000, with the top 23 sites all connected to U.S. schools and the University of Toronto being the highest ranked-non-U.S. school site.
